Canvas Faculty Introductory Training Modules
The following is a list of the topics that are covered in each module:
Module 1: Getting Oriented & Building Content

Getting Oriented
- Basic organization and layout of Canvas, navigating the various sites on Canvas, using the Canvas dashboard
- Setting up one’s own account, profile, and notification settings
- Changing the course homepage and reordering/hiding navigation links
- Learning about Course Settings

Building content
- Using Canvas’ interactive syllabus
- Creating Modules (formerly Angel “folders”), adding content to these, and publishing/ unpublishing content for students to see/not see
- Working with the Files system to upload and manage course content
- Using Pages to present content and walk students through the course
- Working with the Rich Content Editor
- Setting up and using the following features:
Module 2: Assessing & Interacting with Students

Rubrics, Outcomes, Grades, and the Canvas “SpeedGrader”
- Creating and linking Rubrics
- Creating and linking Outcomes
- Setting up the Grade book (Angel Gradebook Categories = Canvas Assignment Groups)
- Using the SpeedGrader
- Using Analytics to assess student progress and course effectiveness. There is also an Attendance feature in Canvas. Click here to learn more about this Roll Call Attendance Tool.

Interacting with and Organizing Students
- For an overview of how to interact with students, view the Communications Overview video
- Communicating using Chat
- Using Canvas’ synchronous Conferences feature for virtual lectures, office hours, etc.
- Creating Announcements
- Using the Calendar
- Working with the People page
- Setting up Groups (formerly Angel “teams”) and using these with the course
- Creating and facilitating Collaborations between students

- Using the Canvas Commons

Finding Support and Going Mobile
- Seeking Support: using the resources available in the Canvas Help Center including the Canvas Guides and Help
- Using the Canvas Mobile App: Android Phone, Android Tablet, iPhone, and the iPad
